From Cairns it is out through the range to Mareeba. Now that you are inland it lessens the chances of coastal showers and on to Mt Malloy, Mt Carbine and by the time you get to the Palmer River Roadhouse you are really soaking up the history and getting an education. The roads were unfenced so you have to be alert at all times but the roads are good until you get back over the range heading into Cooktown. Here there is a short stretch of poor road but you won´t notice with historic Cooktown coming up. When you are returning you may want to turn off at Mt Malloy and head back to Port Douglas (well worth it) and then come back down the coast.
