Rode this road on a weekday so was not too crowded but there were a few logging trucks here and there. Roads as you get down towards the bottom are not as smooth as near the beginning. A few corners had some rough patches to watch out for also the road does narrow in a few places. Overall was a nice ride and would probably do it again.
I have lived by this road for about two years now. It is very popular with the locals and police presence is minimal. Johanniskreuz (www.johanniskreuz.de) is biker hangout in the middle of the route that has good coffee, cakes, etc... I have seen several hundred bikes there at one time on a pretty weekend. During the winter there are hardly any bikes out but visability is the best as most of the foilage has fallen. During the summer, the corners become blind due to the dense foilage. This year, 2006, there was a lot of clear cutting on the lower section and there are not as many trees.
rode this on a sunday in July 05 on way to black forest and we agreed best road on the trip! but a couple of switch backs to watch for!! campsite in middle full of bikers.
The L48 cuts through the Palatinate Forest Biosphere reserve nature park. Plenty of curves as it follows a stream through a steep canyon. The forest is so thick that even on sunny days, much of the road is in the shade. I saw a lot of sportbikes there so, it's popular with the local riders.
