All as been said, what more can I say? A great road, Lots of great corners. The traffic in weekends its one of the negative points. Cheers, Ricardo.
A very beautiful scenic road that goes trough the heart of the Douro vineyards. Youll find plenty of places along the road to stop and admire the views. The only negative point is that it crosses quite a number of small villages and youll have to slow down and be very aware while driving the ocasional narrow road between houses. Some places along the route have some boring straights too.
The N222 winds its way through the world reknowned port vineyards along the Duoro River. The sinuous road follows the river rising up the valley then dropping down low, all the while sending you twisting & weaving along the way. Sections of it were freshly paved when I rode it in 2004 thanks to European Union funds. Traffic can be a problem during the summer or on weekends. You also have to keep an eye out for farm vehicles. You'll seldom get out of third gear but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable. The scenery is spectacular. I compare this to the Mosel River road in Germany, without the castles but with a lot more curves.
