Redid this trip on a wing with a sidecar. We took the ferry from Port Hardy to Bella Coola and drove inland to Williams Lake. I would not want to do the steep part downhill. Really a challenge on the switchbacks and steep sections. Great places to stay along the way. GarthM
This is really a mixed bag, but all of it great in one way or another. Landed in Bella Coola by taking the ferry from Port Hardy on northern Vancouver Island (about $250 for an overnight 20 hour trip). Bella Coola is a tidy First Nations town. Nice pavement up to The Hill. This switchback gravel road is quite an easy climb, not nearly as hairy as I had been lead to believe. Easy on a bike but wouldn want to try it in an SUV towing a trailer! Some spots down to one lane...watch for trucks coming down the hill...they don /can stop. Once up the hill it is still dirt road but in such good shape that it may as well be paved, but it was dry while I was there. Could be slippery when wet! about 40K of dirt and then the rest was paved with good surface. Mostly wide open cruising, sweeping corners, no traffic (and few gas stations). Watch for wildlife (bears, deer, moose) on roads. Great distance ride. Incredible scenery. Wide open high plains country. Great campsites and home cooking stops at the main spots. Geat ride!
