I mostly ride to commute to work so this was quite a nice "adventure" ride for me as a novice away from my familiar route. Might be a bit boring for a seasoned tour rider, but the destination is nice with lots to stop and look at or do along the way. It is a straight out and back ride, so don´t do it late afternoon or you will be riding straight into the setting sun for the ride back to the interstate. Do NOT, repeat do NOT take exit 46 as previously suggested by another reviewer. It is Exit 49, as in NINE, Forty-NINE, not six. Unless you want to add some extra adventure to your ride. If you do, by all means take exit 46 east (but wait a few more weeks as they are resurfacing the road right now and steel plates and loose gravel certainly add to the motorcylist´s level of fun). This puts you on Headquarters Rd, a winding two-lane road with lots of curves that eventually runs out of road putting you onto a gravel road which eventually dead ends into a logging road that has a big yellow barrier that says no thru traffic. Backtracking a ways, you can then take Silver Lake Road north (watch out for wandering dogs) that eventually drops you onto SR 504, which is what this ride is supposed to be on. That´ll teach me to just take a quick look at the comments instead of actually researching the ride before setting out. All in all, I enjoyed the ride itself, although I didn´t make it all the way out due to encroaching darkness (thanks to the unintended side trip) but could have done with the 50 mile ride up from Portland to get there. I´ll do it again, but next time I´ll combine it with lunch and a helicopter tour of the volcano from one of the tour places out there....
Took the ride with a friend yesterday in the 80* sun with about 48% humidity, but when we got to the top, it was in the low to mid 70* with about 40% humid, which made it really enjoyable. The ride at 55 was great fun. Shot some pics, overall I´d give it a thumbs up!
Nothing special here! Might as well stay on the Interstate. Go around to the East side where the road has corners!
The Spirit lake Highway. About 50 miles of great motorcycling road. Take exit 46 from Interstate 5 and keep heading east until the road stops. See the lake and the mountain, well worth it
